Allegan is located on the shores of Lake Michigan and was was named by historian Henry Rowe Schoolcraft in 1837 to sound like a Native American word. The village of Allegan was organization in 1838 with city incorporation authorized in 1907.
The downtown Allegan streets are named after Elisha Ely, Charles Christopher Trowbridge, Samuel Hubbard, Pliny Cutler, and Edmund Monroe.
